'Squid Game' in Austin? Sandbox VR, Netflix is making it happen

If you've ever wondered how you'd fair in 'Squid Game,' you'll soon have the chance to find out at Sandbox VR.

The virtual reality company is collaborating with Netflix to release a new experience based on the hit show late this year. Austin's Sandbox VR location in Domain NORTHSIDE will offer the game alongside the company's other more than 30 global locations.

“Our mission is to bring people closer together through world-class immersive experiences,” Steve Zhao, Sandbox VR founder and CEO, said in a statement. “What could be a more perfect fit than 'Squid Game,' the most widely shared and discussed television series of the past years. It’s an amazing opportunity to partner with Netflix to provide these fans the chance to transport themselves into the world of the show.”

What will the 'Squid Game' experience be like?

According to a release from Sandbox VR, the 'Squid Game' experience will see players "compete against each other to be the last one standing" in various thrilling games. These games will take place in several 'Squid Game' locations.

Players will receive a highlight video at the end of their session.

How many people can play?

All Sandbox VR games allow for up to six players.

How does Sandbox VR work?

Sandbox VR takes players into a large deck space, wearing motion-trackers and headsets with a haptic system.

What other games does Sandbox VR have?

There are currently six games from Sandbox VR:

  • Deadwood Valley

  • Amber Sky 2088

  • Curse of Davy Jones

  • Deadwood Mansion

  • Star Trek: Discovery

  • UFL

Experiences like Amber Sky 2088 and Star Trek: Discovery tap into sci-fi, while Deadwood Valley and Deadwood Mansion embrace horror. Deadwood Valley is the company's most recent release.

How much is a ticket?

Tickets range from $55 to $65 per person.
