Sri Lanka Gym Patrons Exercise in Dark Amid Economic Crisis
Sri Lanka officials approved 13-hour power cuts for the country on March 31 amid fuel shortages and a deepening economic crisis, local media outlet Ada Derana reported.
Power cuts lasting 12 hours were approved for the following day, April 1, Lankadeepa reported.
Sri Lanka faces high levels of debt and is enduring its worst economic crisis in recent memory, with shortages of medicine, fuel, fertilizer, and milk powder alongside daily power outages lasting for hours, media reported.
On Thursday, state media reported that “tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka surpassed 100,000 per month for the first time in two years.”
According to Al Jazeera, the country relies on hydropower for the generation of more than 40 percent of its electricity. Severe dry weather has led water levels in reservoirs to “rapidly reced[e],” the Island reported.
