SS Badger Lake Michigan Car Ferry returns to Manitowoc and more can't-miss events happening this week

1. Welcome the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan Car Ferry back to Manitowoc

The return of the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan Car Ferry season is the official start of Manitowoc’s summer, and the public shows up in a big way!

The Badger makes her return at around noon May 18, at which time there will be a presentation, entertainment from the Lincoln High School band, alpacas from LondonDairy Alpacas, and more to celebrate the 70th anniversary sailing season.

2. View the new Art as Poetry, Poetry as Art exhibit

Inspiration for art comes from all sorts of sources, including poetry!

The Art as Poetry/Poetry as Art exhibit, organized by the Lakeshore Artist Guild, showcases art that was inspired by poetry and poetry by art.

The opening reception for this exhibit is at 1 p.m. May 21 at the Rahr-West Art Museum, 610 N. Eighth St., at which time you can view the artwork, meet the artists, and enjoy refreshments.

3. Celebrate Hmong culture at the library

Join community members in a celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Hmong American Day at the Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 18.

There will be many ways to partake in this event, including arts and crafts, food, music, language and dress.

4. Attend the Midwestern Model Ships and Boat Contest

A gold-medal winning model that earned the best miniature award in 2015 at the Midwestern Model Ships & Boats Contest & Display at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s model ship gallery is one of the biggest in the Midwest and has everything from tug boats to barges.

You can see these — and so much more — at the Midwestern Model Ships and Boats Contest May 19-21 at the museum, 75 Maritime Drive.

This event is complete with judging, an awards ceremony and time for the remote-controlled models to take on the water.

5. Stop by the Gritty Badger’s grand opening

Downtown Manitowoc’s newest gift shop, Gritty Badger, will celebrate its grand opening May 18.

From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., stop in to shop a variety of unique products including cards, socks, tumblers, candles and more!

The new store is at 151 N. Seventh St., Manitowoc.
