St. Andrew's school construction on schedule

Feb. 16—With the end of the construction on St. Andrew's Elementary School six months away, Bishop Jerry Vincke of the Catholic Diocese of Salina toured the construction while visiting St. Andrews. Construction for the expansion and renovations for St. Andrew's Elementary School have been underway for about 10 months. Rev. Peter O'Donnell said the work will be done by Aug. 1 as scheduled.

"Now that the building is almost done, we're envisioning the playground," Rev. O'Donnell said. "That land west of the school addition is going to be an expansion of the playground... We need to build a fence; we need to add some equipment; (and) a walking trail.

Rev. O'Donnell said he hopes the playground expansion will be completed in August as well.

The scope of the expansion is: — Classrooms for each fifth grade and fourth grade, each 850 square feet. — A 1172 square feet music room that will also serve as a storm shelter. — Bathrooms. — Expansion of the playground. — The current fourth grade rooms are to be renovated into meeting rooms. — Kitchen renovations.

The budget for the project is around $3 million.
