St. Johns County government's Cultural Events Division, which runs the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, will become a nonprofit, according to a news release from the division.

The County Commission approved the switch this month at the recommendation of the Amphitheatre & Concert Hall Advisory Committee, which was created by the Board in May to advise the commission on ideas for the Cultural Events Division.

"The approval of the committee’s recommendation will allow the Cultural Events Division to function as a private business with the intention of alleviating governmental process constraints and further enhancing its economic impact on St. Johns County," according to the release.

The committee's recommendation was based on "county staff input, fact-based dialogue and over 500 hours in collective work since first meeting on June 21, 2022," according to the release.

"It was determined that the business of cultural events requires greater flexibility than what government can allow, and conversely, that government requires greater conformity than what the fast-paced entertainment industry can accommodate," according to the Cultural Events Division.

The next steps recommended by the committee include creating a business and transition plan for the nonprofit.
