UF Health St. Johns — Flagler Hospital’s Gillian Tarbett R.N. receives a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for providing “superb and exemplary” care and emotional support to a patient and his family during his time in the hospital.

Nominated by Lenus Sutherland, the nurse stationed on the fifth floor was noted to be “extremely knowledgeable, articulate, personable and wise.”

“She allayed my daughter's fears and tirelessly answered my questions and concerns,” Sutherland wrote in his nomination letter.

Sutherland, a season veteran in the field of health care technology, wrote that he was impressed by her clinical knowledge and demeanor, both of which left him in the “best possible space for recovery.”

“Her medical education was obviously solid and wide-ranging,” he wrote. “Her communication skills were superb and her interactions with fellow healthcare team members left us all feeling like the care I would receive from any of them was to be trusted.”

In a recent press release, Tarbett described the award as an honor.

“I want to be that nurse who gets to know her patients,” she said. “If I can help ease that fear just a little bit, it makes my heart happy.”

“It was a privilege to see her in action and to be under her expert care,” wrote Sutherland.

Carlton DeVooght, president and CEO of UF Health St. Johns, described the care given by Tarbett as the standard of care the healthcare system aspires to.

“Gillian provided the physical and emotional care that Mr. Sutherland needed in his time of duress,” he said. "UF Health St. Johns focuses on each and every patient's experience when they are with us, and Gillian represents exactly what we endeavor to accomplish.”

Tarbett received a stone-carved Healers Touch trophy; a DAISY winner’s pin; a gift basket and a $200 bonus.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is an international program that acknowledges, rewards, and celebrates what the program describes as super-human efforts, extraordinary compassion and skill given by nurses to patients and their families every day.

The not-for-profit California-based organization was established in 1999 by J. Mark Barnes in memory of his son Patrick, who died from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a rare autoimmune disease.

The nursing care given to 33-year-old Patrick inspired the family to establish the foundation to thank nurses for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and families while caring for those who are ill.

The DAISY Award celebrates nurses in over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing worldwide.
