LAFAYETTE, Ind. — St. Boniface Church closed its church sanctuary in late March after structural problems were discovered in the sanctuary roof, a church employee confirmed Wednesday.

Mass has been held in the neighboring St. Boniface Church's school gymnasium, the employee said. The school remains unaffected by the problems in the sanctuary and continues to operate on a normal schedule.

The Journal & Courier left several message for the church for comment. It also left messages with the Diocese of Lafayette, asking for comment. No one returned the calls.

The land on which the church and its school sit was purchased in 1853 by German-speaking members of St. Mary's Church, according to Journal & Courier archives. The church's mission was to minister to the mostly German immigrants in that section of the city.

The church building was constructed in 1864. Its brick exterior was covered with imitation stone in 1916. That faux façade was removed decades later, revealing the original brick, according to the Journal & Courier archives.
