St. Charles North Grad Honored For Saving Neighbor’s Life
ST. CHARLES, IL — Recent St. Charles North graduate Mary Kate Phillips was honored last month with the Citizen’s Lifesaving Award for performing CPR on her choking 8-year-old neighbor.
One morning in July, the girl’s mother ran across the street to Phillips' house after she was unable to dislodge food from her daughter’s airway. Phillips jumped into action, using her CPR kit and training to clear the girl’s airway before police reached the home, as previously reported.

St. Charles Mayor Raymond Rogina gave Phillips the award Aug. 17 at a small ceremony outside the city’s Municipal Building.
Phillips was celebrated at the ceremony by her parents, members of the St. Charles Fire Department and the parents of the girl she saved.

Phillips credited her training in the school’s Physical Education Leaders program, led by swim coach and teacher Rob Rooney, for knowing what to do and how to stay calm during the stressful situation to save the young girl. Rooney also attended the award ceremony last month.
