St. Clair County Clerk Jay DeBoyer announced he’s running for state representative in the new 63rd House District.

The reapportioned district, which includes both parts of St. Clair and Macomb counties, covers all of Clay, China, Cottrellville, East China, and Ira townships, as well as the cities of Algonac, Marine City, and St. Clair. It also cuts through Casco Township, covering the community south of Lindsay Road.

DeBoyer, a Republican, will be running for the Aug. 2 primary. His election committee’s statement of organization was filed with the state March 5.

“I believe the people of Macomb and St Clair County deserve strong independent leadership beholden to no one other than the citizens,” DeBoyer said in a statement. “They deserve representation in Lansing that is neither extreme nor weak and that is not afraid to stand up to the status quo and defend what we so dearly love. Experience matters, we need common sense experienced leadership defending our families, our freedom, and our faith.”

According to the Secretary of State’s campaign finance committee database, other candidates who’ve filed include Macomb County’s Jacky Eubanks and Michael Williams as Republicans and Kelly Noland as a Democrat.

Jake Skarbek, Algonac city councilman.

The official formation of a committee to elect Algonac City Councilman Jake Skarbek is also pending with the state. He filed as a Republican in the 63rd on March 12.

Currently, southern St. Clair County is represented by the 32nd House District and state Rep. Pamela Hornberger, a Chesterfield Township Republican in Macomb County. The newly reapportioned map split Chesterfield between the 62nd and 63rd districts.

While Hornberger’s last listed address is still inside the House district that touches St. Clair County, she filed to run in the 12th District, which includes Algonac and Clay and Ira townships in St. Clair County, an eastern chunk of Macomb County, and a northeastern sliver of Wayne County.

In his release, DeBoyer cites his work on “defending the integrity and security of the election process,” as well as maintaining finances in the clerk’s office.

DeBoyer was appointed county clerk in 2011 to fill the remainder of retiring clerk Marilyn Dunn's term. His current term ends in 2024. He was Clay Township's supervisor at the time he was appointed to the county position.
