St. Clair woman opens new hair salon for men in Nieman's Family Market plaza

Cosmetologist Sarah Keeton is bringing a sense of style to men in the St. Clair area with the opening of a men's and boys' hair salon.

Keeton opened Studz at 1183 South Carney Dr. in the Nieman's Family Market plaza on Sept. 12. She said business so far has been busy, with lots of new clients from the St. Clair area.

The salon offers haircuts, beard trims, massages, facials, waxing and grey color blend. Keeton said her salon differs from a corporate hair cutting salon or a barbershop because all haircuts come with a shampoo and a hot lather shave with a hot towel.

"I just really enjoy a guy coming in and feeling all scruffy and scrubby and him leaving feeling like a million bucks," Keeton said. "I just really enjoy making people feel good about themselves."

The inside of the salon is construction-themed, with exposed brick and wood planks, toolboxes and hard hats as decoration.

"It's got a manly feel to it. The theme is under construction," Keeton said. "I have a wall that look like two-by-fours are running down it. It's like a fresh feel. It has nice bright lights."

Keeton used to manage and cut hair for Lady Jane's Haircuts for Men, a corporate chain, in Clinton Township. Now, she is opening her own business with employees she hired herself.

"I'm really excited to be an owner because I feel like I know how to make (my employees) happy and want to stay and just have a good all-around work atmosphere," Keeton said.

Keeton moved to St. Clair in 2017 and fell in love with the area. She said she had been waiting for the right opportunity to move her business to the area, and jumped on the opportunity when the space became available.

Joe Reyes, Keeton's client of about seven years, said Keeton is personable and does a wonderful job on his hair.

Trevor Stenzel, also a long-time client of Keeton's, said she has watched him grow up while cutting his hair from the time he was 18.

"When I found someone who I liked how they cut my hair I kept going back, and it developed into a friendship," Stenzel said.

Both men said Keeton is very accommodating to their schedules. While they both live outside of St. Clair County, they plan to make the drive to continue to see Keeton for their haircuts.

The shop is open for appointments and walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Prices for haircuts range from $19 to $25, while other services range from $8 to $12. Discounts are available for first responders and military members.
