St. Cloud Crush doubles tennis team ready for state tourney

ST. CLOUD — The St. Cloud Crush doubles tennis team of Ella Marohl and Paige Tarrolly won in the section finals and are headed to the Minnesota Class 2A tournament.

They will play 10 a.m. Thursday in the opening round at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. They will face Amanda Diao and Avery Schifsky of Mounds View.

Marohl and Tarrolly won the section doubles championship Saturday, Oct. 15, in Sartell against Ayla Brown and Dani Nuest of Becker.

This is the second state tournament appearance for the doubles team. They played in last year's tournament after finishing as section runners-up.

After starting the season as the team's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Tarrolly and Marohl decided to make another run at the section tournament as a doubles pair, according to head coach Paul Bates.

"They have really improved their communication as a team, along with developing some doubles strategies. Singles and doubles are different games and when they decided on playing doubles together it gave them a little more time to practice together," Bates said.

They are 6-1 as a doubles team heading into the state tournament.

Both players were named to the Times All-Metro team last year. Marohl is a senior and Tarrolly is in ninth grade.

The state tournament's doubles championship round will be played Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
