St. Cloud State hockey sweeps Miami in dominating weekend

ST. CLOUD — After an 11-1 win on Friday, the St. Cloud State men's hockey team remained on a hot streak for Saturday's game against Miami (Ohio).

The Huskies shut out Miami on Saturday with an 8-0 victory to sweep the weekend series.

Veeti Miettinen started off the scoring halfway through the first period with a power play goal. Then, he scored his second goal about two minutes later to make it a 2-0 lead.

He was assisted by Nick Perbix, Sam Hentges and Zach Okabe on those two goals. Kevin Fitzgerald ended the first period with a goal and a 3-0 lead over Miami with assists from Kyler Kupka and Micah Miller.

The Huskies continued scoring in the second period with a goal from Easton Brodzinski about five minutes into the period. Then, Josh Luedtke and Hentges scored about a minute and a half apart near the end of the period to make it 6-0 after two periods.

Chase Brand, Perbix and Brodzinski had assists in the last two goals of the second period. Miller and Fitzgerald scored the final two goals in the third period to make it an 8-0 final score.

Jack Peart and Kupka earned assists in both of the third period goals. This makes it eight goals and 12 assists on Saturday night to show the depth of this SCSU hockey team.

David Hrenak earned the shutout with 14 saves and only allowed one goal during this Miami series. This is the third shutout of the season for Hrenak with shutouts against St. Thomas and Bemidji State.

This win improves the Huskies' record to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference. St. Cloud State will travel to the University of North Dakota on Friday and Saturday next weekend for a rivalry weekend in Grand Forks.

The Fighting Hawks are ranked No. 9, according to the USCHO.COM rankings on Jan. 16. The Huskies are ranked No. 6. These two teams met in St. Cloud earlier this season on Dec. 3 and 4.

SCSU earned the 8-1 win on Dec. 3, but UND came back to win 5-3 on Dec. 4 to tie the series. The Huskies and Fighting Hawks will play at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.
