ST Engineering's Pensacola aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility has crossed the 200 employees mark, according to the latest hiring numbers provided by the company.

The current headcount at the ST Engineering hangar is 203 workers, Manager of Talent Acquisition and Development Sarah Kyser told the council Tuesday.

The number marks the halfway point for the first ST Engineering hangar to reach the 400 new jobs promised for the first hangar.

The second hangar is under construction as part of a $210 million project to expand the facility into four hangars and office space that, when complete, officials say will employee at least 1,725 aviation workers.

Kyser said ST Engineering's hiring plan will result in 1,753 workers by 2028, with about 1,200 of those workers being trained as part ST Engineering's various training partnerships in the community.

The company has partnered with George Stone Technical College to provide aircraft mechanic students a paid job with on-the-job training as they go through the school's program to become certified aircraft mechanics.

Kyser said a majority of the 18 workers at the hangar who obtained their full aircraft mechanic certification last month started in the first George Stone class in the program in 2018.

The company also signed an agreement with UPS, one of its biggest customers, last year to provide advanced training to aircraft mechanics in Pensacola.

The average pay for the 203 workers is $58,993, with aircraft mechanics drawing an average pay of $62,896 and aircraft mechanic trainees being paid $33,696.

To answer Myers' question on gender makeup, Kyser reported that 11% of its workers in Pensacola were women.

Women make up 3.8% of its aircraft mechanics in Pensacola, compared to 2.6% in the U.S., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
