PEORIA – OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center made U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-23 ranking of best hospitals in Illinois.

St. Francis Medical Center tied for 14th place with three Chicago-area hospitals. Though St. Francis is not nationally ranked in any specialty, it was rated as “high performing” in one adult specialty – urology – and 10 procedures or conditions. It received top scores for colon cancer and lung cancer surgery, treatment of heart attack, heart failure, diabetes, kidney failure, COPD, and performing hip and knee replacements.

Though UnityPoint Health's Peoria hospitals did not make the ranking of top hospitals, they did received high performance ratings for treating heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, and performing knee replacement.

It received high performance ratings in three adult specialties: gastroenterology and GI surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and geriatrics. It also received high performance ratings in several procedures: colon cancer surgery, heart attack and heart failure, kidney failure, knee replacement, and the treatment of COPD and pneumonia.

U.S. News generates hospital rankings by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in the U.S and 205 in Illinois. The No. 1 hospital in Illinois is Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the top children’s hospital is Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

Specialty rankings are designed to help patients with life-threatening or rare conditions find a hospital that excels in treating complex, high-risk cases, according to U.S. News & World Report.

"Based on your health situation, it might make more sense to go to an average hospital closer to you or within your insurance network than a high-performing hospital that isn’t. As always, these ratings should be taken as a starting point. All care decisions should be made in conjunction with medical professionals."
