One of St. George's busiest stretches of road is about to be closed temporarily, but traffic planners are hoping the move could be worth it in the long run.

The stretch of Bluff Street between Main Street and Interstate 15 is scheduled to be closed for two weeks starting Monday, June 13, to make room for the construction of a new pedestrian tunnel under the freeway.

The I-15 southbound off-ramp will be open to eastbound traffic but closed to westbound traffic during the closure, according to a release from the Utah Department of Transportation.

UDOT is working with the City of St. George on the project, which should connect to the east and west side of the Hilton Drive Trail. The estimated cost was more than $3 million. The underpass should allow pedestrians and cyclists to avoid the busy Main Street intersection and cross safely.

There will be detour signs, and UDOT was asking drivers to prepare accordingly for travel while the full shut down takes place. While the road is scheduled to reopen after the two-week closure, the overall construction project is expected to run through September.
