St. George is planning an event titled "Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11" at the city's Town Square Park downtown on Saturday, two days ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The free event, open to the public, is scheduled for 10 a.m., with a bell tribute by city firefighters, children's choirs and a guest speaker in Victor Guzman, an attorney whose office was in the second tower attacked on 9/11.

The city is partnering with the American Legion Post 142, Exchange Club of St. George, Daughters of the American Revolution and other organizations to organize the event. The Town Square Park is on the block southwest of the intersection of Tabernacle St. and Main St., near the St. George Tabernacle.

Later on Saturday, the American Legion and a group called United We Pledge is scheduled to host a flag retirement ceremony at 7:30 p.m.

On Monday, a concert in the park featuring local artists Eric Dodge, Casey Lofthouse, Mikalene and Alice Erickson is slated to start at 7:30 p.m., with the theme of "Salute to First Responders." A pre-show featuring local middle school bands is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

From Saturday through Monday, the Town Square lawn will also host a "Field of Heroes" display over 343 American flags.

Nearly 3,000 were killed in the coordinated terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, including 412 first responders.

"It has become a yearly tradition for us to gather and recall the 9/11 tragedy as well as celebrate the way we came together as Americans in response to the attacks," Mayor Michele Randall said. "When you see a first responder that weekend, please thank him or her for serving our community."

St. George has hosted similar events for the past several years, with hundreds gathering on the lawn outside the Town Square tower to view the ceremonies.
