St. Helena III canal boat in Canal Fulton to be sandblasted, waterproofed

KEY ACTION: Heard that sandblasting the St. Helena III canal boat is underway.

DISCUSSION: The boat has been in dry dock because it had been taking on water. Once the sandblasting is completed, the boat will be waterproofed. City officials hope to have the boat back in the water by May 1. Visit Canton is providing a grant of $13,000 to help cover the $26,000 cost.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Heard that the Parks Department will be kicking off its first walk in a series at 9 a.m. March 15 at Puffenberger Park. Participants are to meet in the Schalmo Family YMCA parking lot.

  • Heard that the Parks Department will conduct an Easter egg hunt at noon April 1 at St. Helena Heritage Park.

  • Heard that income tax collections had increased by 7.9% year-over-year with $497,085 collected this year compared to $460,681 last year.

  • Heard that the Fire Department will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. April 29. Free car seat safety checks will be available.

  • Agreed to pay the Signal Service Company $22,700 to install four lights and to pay MV Equipment $5,500 for soundproof panels near or at the amphitheater in St. Helena Heritage Park.

  • Adjourned to executive session to discuss a property lease or easement and compensation of a public employee. No action was taken upon reconvening.
