The other finalists were St. Johns Deputy Superintendent Kelly Corbett and Jay Larner, assistant superintendent of Mattawan Consolidated Schools. The board had earlier also interviewed Bellevue Superintendent Mark McGarry and retired Lowell Superintendent Greg Pratt during a search process facilitated by the Michigan Leadership Institute.

Berthiaume has led the New Lothop district since 2014 and previously was principal of the junior and senior high school.

The board said it would begin contract negotiations with Berthiaume. It was unclear when he will start his new job, but Palmer's retirement is set to become official on July 1.
