St. John's, Wachusett among top teams at MIAA Alpine Ski State Championship

Boys' skiing

MIAA State Alpine Championship: Luke Cronin was 20th in the giant slalom (51.89), while teammate Mihal Gavala (52.97) placed 26th as the Pioneers finished seventh (5:24.07) at the Alpine Championships at Berkshire East.

St. John's Prep won the meet (5:02.91), while Bromfield was 12th (5:36.98) and Westborough was 15th (5:49.53).

Bromfield's Noah Bagley (50.05) was 10th in the giant slalom, edging Nashoba's Declan Varnerin (50.23) and Algonquin's Michael Desio (50.27). Cohasset's Robert Blanchand won the race in 48.63.

Nipmuc's Ronan Joyce was 19th (51.66) and Shrewsbury's Kieren Ghidella took 41st (53.98).

Varnerin was the top local finisher in the slalom, taking 10th (50.96). Marblehead's Baxter Jennings won in 46.51.

Nashoba's Erik Fish was 15th in the slalom (51.7), while Ghidella took 19th (52.89), Joyce was 24th (53.39), St. John's Tommy Robinson was 32nd (54.05), Gavala was 34th (54.34) and Bromfield's Oscar Pride was 41st (54.56).

Girls' skiing

MIAA State Alpine Championship: Wachusett's Kate Robinson took third in the slalom (49.24) and 23rd in the giant slalom (53.73) to help the Mountaineers finish eighth (5:39.21) at Berkshire East.

Mohawk Trail won the championship with a combined time of 5:13.54.

Nashoba's Ella Varnerin (fifth, 49.82) and Jillian Bradford (sixth, 49.84) also shined in the slalom, while Wachusett's Eleanor Lubin (51.33) was 10th and Algonquin's Jula Utzschneider placed 24th (53.61).

Lunenburg's Neve Martin (53.97) was 27th, teammate Abby Reid placed 32nd (55.18) and Shrewsbury's Anyee Li was 34th (55.42).

Varnerin was the top local finisher in the giant slalom, taking third (50.08), while teammate Jillian Bradford took fifth (50.69). Marblehead's Cate Honos won the race in 49.28.

Lubin took 13th (52.46), Utzschneider took 17th (52.99), Li was 34th (54.89), Reid was 42nd (55.92), Algonquin's Alexa Butterfield was 43rd (56.09) and Nipmuc's Nina Szymanowski was 46th (56.22) and teammate Astrid Lee (56.26) took 47th.
