Memphis company makes top 10 in Forbes Best Employers list

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital landed at No. 9 on Forbes’ annual list of America’s Best Large Employers, published Tuesday.

It was the highest ranking for any Tennessee company, edging out Chattanooga-based BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee, which was at No. 11.

The hospital, founded in Memphis in 1962 by actor Danny Thomas, employs 5,001, according to Forbes. The minimum size for a company to be included on the Large Employers list is 5,000.

In 2018, St. Jude also made the Forbes list of Best Midsize Employers. That’s before several major expansions, including a $1 billion project announced last year, the largest in the hospital’s history.

Another Memphis company, Mueller Industries, landed at No. 207 on the Best Midsize Employers list.

Forbes’ lists are based on surveys that asked 170,000 workers to rate their employer, and whether they would recommend their employer to others. Six hundred of the highest-scoring companies made the list.

St. Jude released a statement Thursday.

We are proud to be recognized alongside other great employers on this list. It’s a testament to the work our employees do every day toward our mission of finding cures and saving children. We welcome the best and brightest in the field to join us in our goal of accelerating progress in understanding and treating childhood cancer and other pediatric catastrophic diseases.
