St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher to make rehab appearance for Peoria Chiefs

PEORIA — The Peoria Chiefs lineup will include St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Drew VerHagen when the Midwest League team hosts Beloit on Wednesday at Dozer Park.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound right-handed reliever is returning from a right shoulder impingement. He last pitched for the Cardinals on June 23, and could throw in more than one game for the Chiefs during their six-game series with Beloit this week.

VerHagen, 31, signed with the Cardinals as a free agent in March for $5.5 million over two years. He spent the last two seasons with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League.

The Royse City, Texas, native was a fourth-round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft by Detroit. He is 13-11 with a 5.22 ERA in seven MLB seasons.

The Chiefs last had a Cardinals player on MLB rehab when starting pitcher Miles Mikolas threw at Dozer Park on Aug. 14, 2021.
