St. Mary-Corwin Hospital has been named one of the most socially responsible medical centers in the nation for practicing equity while offering both value and results.

Ranked No. 12 in the U.S. by the Lown Institute for its social responsibility, St. Mary-Corwin was graded on more than 50 metrics such as racial inclusivity of patients, employee pay equity and avoidance of unnecessary and potentially harmful procedures.

Out of more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide, only 66, including St. Mary-Corwin, received “A” grades in the Lown Institute Hospitals Index — a tool established in 2020 that's used to evaluate hospitals on a social level, according to a press release.

Hospitals like St. Mary-Corwin have to earn “A” grades in each of the three major categories to achieve the title of “most socially responsible.”

“Being socially responsible might be a new, trendy term, but it’s the same way we’ve provided care to the community for almost 140 years," said Mike Cafasso, chief executive officer for St. Mary-Corwin. "This ranking is in line with our values which compels us to be an organization intentional in our commitment to equity for our patients and caregivers."

The index highlights the institutions nationwide that are leading and lagging in social responsibility and provides benchmarks for hospitals to measure how well they serve their patients and communities.

Two other Colorado Hospitals — Denver Health & Hospital Authority, which ranked 10th, and North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, which ranked 19th — made the index's top 20.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of only three hospitals in Colorado that received this socially responsible ranking and we are thankful,” Cafasso said. "Treating everyone who comes through our doors with compassion and respect is our daily promise."

“Citizens put their lives and billions of tax dollars in the hands of America’s hospitals,” said Dr. Vikas Saini, president of the Lown Institute. “We believe communities should have high expectations and the most socially responsible institutions should be lifted up as models for the system.”

“Achieving the trifecta of great outcomes, value, and equity is hard — especially under the pressures of a global pandemic," Saini said.
