St. Michael XC wins Lancer Invite; Boyne City, Charlevoix soccer play to draw

MIDLAND — The Petoskey St. Michael Academy boys’ cross country team traveled down to Midland over the weekend and made the most of the trip down.

Competing in the Lancer Invite and a field of 18 teams, Petoskey St. Michael brought home the win with a close finish over Gladwin.

St. Michael captured 42 points for the victory, edging out Gladwin’s 48. Sanford-Meridian was then third with 74, followed by Bay City John Glenn, 133 and Reese, 151.

“While it wasn’t a particularly graceful team-wide performance, I’m proud of how the guys are persevering through a variety of current challenges and did enough to secure the victory,” St. Michael coach Larry Rudnicki said. “I have no doubt that we will get significantly better, as a full team, in the weeks ahead.”

Along with the overall win, St. Michael had Macartan Moore top the race with a first place time of 17 minutes, 6.52 seconds.

Also for St. Michael, Zachary Maendel was third overall (17:41), Lynus Cadarette placed fourth (18:04), Russell Vandermus, 16th (19:27); Cody Bradley, 18th (19:43); and Levi Benzing, 23rd (19:55).

“Mac took charge mid-race and didn’t flinch,” added Rudnicki. “That was a breakout run for him – clearly a mid-16s caliber performance on a cooler day, on a more compliant course – easily his best race ever. We also had another stellar outing from Lynus who shows the potential to not merely be an impact freshman, but a division 4 all-stater.”

On the girls side, Jane Manthei placed eighth overall for St. Michael (22:41), Sydney Feagan was 16th (24:42) and Siobhan Weed, 53rd (29:23).

Boyne City 0, Charlevoix 0

BOYNE FALLS — As rivals in every sport, the Charlevoix and Boyne City boys’ soccer teams look forward to seeing each other on the field every season.

That time finally came Monday at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls, though a decision between the two will have to wait until they meet again later this season.

The Ramblers and Rayders played to a 0-0 tie, though both side had their chances on the night.

It came as Boyne City’s fourth draw of the season and moved them to 3-3-4 overall. It was also their third scoreless draw and also moved them to 1-1-1 within the Lake Michigan Conference.

Charlevoix moved to 3-2-3 overall on the year and 1-1-2 within the LMC.

Boyne City’s Kacey Gray made six saves in the shutout performance for the Ramblers, while Boyne had eight shots on goal in the game.

The Ramblers return to action this Thursday, Sept. 15 against league leader Elk Rapids on the road, while Charlevoix next travels to Kalkaska on Thursday for a LMC meeting.
