St. Paul goes 1-2 at Lehman Labor Day Invite

Sep. 5—SIDNEY — The St. Paul volleyball team went 1-2 on Saturday at the Lehman Catholic Labor Day Invitational in Sidney.

St. Paul (3-3) opened with a commanding win over Anna, 25-20, 25-9. The Flyers then lost two close matches to Minster (25-17, 26-28, 29-27) and host Lehman Catholic (25-27, 25-23, 25-20) in three sets.

Against Anna, Lillian Chylik and Ryleigh Rohrbacher each had five kills. Kegney Stoll and Chylik each went 11 for 11 serving, while Klaire Hickey was 10 for 10. Ella Wangler added 13 digs, and Kristin Matlack was 49-of-49 setting with 23 assists.

In the loss to Minster, Geralyn Mutchler had 10 kills and Rohbacher added seven. Chylik was 13 for 13 serving, while Hickey was 22 for 24 with two aces and Lily Cuturic was 12 for 14 with two aces.

Chylik had eight kids, with Matlack and Hickey adding six each. Matlack was 73-of-74 setting with 22 assists.

Against Lehman Catholic, Wangler had 11 kills and Rohrbacher added eight. Hickey was 17 for 18 serving, while Chylik was 14 for 14 and Matlack was 12 for 12.

Cuturic had 17 digs, followed by Elaina Herring and Matlack with 10 and Wangler with nine. Matlack was 97-of-98 setting with 30 assists.

St. Paul is back in Firelands Conference play on Thursday at Mapleton.

Seneca East 3, Willard 0

ATTICA — The Crimson Flashes fell to 3-3 with Saturday's three-set non-league loss to the host Tigers.

Seneca East won with scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 27-25.

Kelsey Lykins led Willard at the net with 10 kills, four blocks, and was 14 for 15 serving with an ace. Cassie Hamons was 25 for 26 serving with three aces, 12 assists and eight digs.

Also for the Flashes, Makinley Schaffer was 7 for 8 serving with an ace and had four kills, while Syana Sivongsak had 12 digs and Addie Stephens finished with eight.

"After a fast start in the first set, everything went south," Willard coach Ashley Bond said. "That's just more proof of how momentum in volleyball is a game changer. Once we lost it, we couldn't get it back. We will put this game behind us and focus on what we have coming up on Tuesday."

Willard is at Western Reserve (4-1) in a non-league match on Tuesday.

South Central splits tri-match

LUCAS — The Trojans are 5-2 overall after defeating Hillsdale in two (25-21, 25-22) and falling to host Lucas in three (18-25, 25-11, 26-24) on Saturday.

The Trojans (3-0 FC) have a key match vs. Western Reserve (4-1, 3-0) on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

St. Paul ninth at Bellevue

OXFORD TWP. — The Flyers finished ninth among 18 teams on Saturday at the Bellevue Invitational at Woussickett golf course.

St. Paul shot a 358 as a team over the 18 holes, led by Sam Scavuzzo with an 87 and Owen Romell with an 88. The Flyers also got scores from Nolan McCall (91), Gavin Thurston (92) and Dan Schwan (114).

The Flyers are off until Sept. 12 when they travel to face Plymouth in FC action.

GIRLS SOCCER

Firelands 4, Norwalk 0

HENRIETTA TWP. — The Truckers fell to 2-2 overall with Saturday's non-league shutout loss to the host Falcons (5-1).

Norwalk will look to rebound at home on Wednesday when it hosts Clyde in SBC Lake Division play. The Truckers are 39-1-1 in SBC Lake Division play since the league was formed in 2017.

CROSS COUNTRY

Norwalk girls fifth at Ashland

ASHLAND — The Norwalk girls cross country team was fifth and the boys were 18th on Saturday at the 21-team Ashland Invitational.

In the girls race, sophomore Zuri Immel led the Truckers by placing fourth overall in 19:47. Her freshman sister, Xavi, finished in sixth in 19:57.

Also for Norwalk, Isabel Ott placed 23rd (21:01); Kylie Moser (22:43) was 56th; and Maddison Trenor (23:02) finished 64th. Kayli Bergman (122nd, 24:35) and Addison Daniels (152nd, 25:49) rounded out the top seven.

Also running for the Trucker girls was Melody Seager (171st, 26:32), Emma Romell (175th, 26:39) and Hailee Smith (259th, 32:54).

In the boys race, Casey Kromer led Norwalk in a time of 17:15, good for 14th. Max Bores (18:52) finished 92nd, followed by Alex Christopher (19:52) in 144th, Landen Knoll (20:08) in 160th, Joe Lyons (20:34) in 181st, Owen Wagner (21:33) in 230th and Devon Roberts (21:36) in 233rd.

Also running for NHS was Wesley Shupe (240th, 21:40); Anthony Hall (268th, 22:16); Isaak White (287th, 22:43); Michael Lucas (288th, 22:44); Kynan Sparks (289th, 22:45); Aidan Adkins (324th, 23:54); Xavier Petersen (331st, 24:04); and Noah Smith (367th, 25:48).

"It was a very hot and humid race," Norwalk head coach Stephanie Pope said. "I am very proud of the effort all of the kids put in. They all did a great job battling the heat and giving their all.

"I am thrilled with the girls team finishing fifth in the Division I race, especially since the girls are Division II," she added. "We are looking forward to seeing what everyone can do as the season progresses."

Norwalk will compete at the Tiffin Carnival on Saturday at Hedges-Boyer Park.

JUNIOR HIGH

St. Paul sweeps Western

COLLINS — The St. Paul seventh and eighth-grade volleyball teams defeated Western Reserve on Sept. 1.

The seventh-grade posted wins of 25-18 and 25-16.

Brooklyn Cassidy was 9 for 10 with five aces, followed by Elsie Shumaker at 7 for 9 with three aces, and Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush was 4 for 4 with an ace. Jess Matlack had three kills and Piper Hipp had two; while Layla Fair had three assists and Shumaker added two.

St. Paul won the eighth-grade match, 25-13, 25-15.

Kennedy Frazee was 17 for 17 serving with three aces, and Sydney Wurzel was 10 for 11 with four aces; and Sarah Gocsik was 5 for 6. Ella Kalizewski added six kills and three assists, while Annie Friend had seven assists and Avery Gibson had three kills.
