St. Paul opens with rout over Hopewell

Mar. 27—BASCOM — Kole Maxwell had five total bases and threw four shutout innings on the mound as the St. Paul baseball team opened the season with a 13-0 run-rule win over host Hopewell-Loudon in non-league play on Monday.

Maxwell was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run and a pair of runs scored. On the mound, he allowed just one hit with 10 strikeouts and two walks to the 16 batters he faced.

"It was a complete victory," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "We played well in all phases. Kole was outstanding on the mound. Defensively, we made plays when called upon.

"Offensively, we really hit to our potential in the fourth and fifth innings to close it out."

The Flyers (1-0) scored 13 runs on nine hits and also drew nine walks as a team.

Ben Burger singled and drove in three runs, while Drew Kuhnle doubled and drove in a run. Alex Weaver had two hits and an RBI, and Landon Fries was 3 for 3 and scored a pair of runs.

Ashton Stang also pitched a scoreless fifth inning for the Flyers.

St. Paul continues its busy week of seven scheduled games in six days with a non-league home game Tuesday vs. St. Mary Central Catholic in non-league play.

SHELBY — The Truckers were held to a pair of hits by four different Shelby pitchers on Monday in a non-league setback in the season opener.

Bray Malson and Cooper Smith each singled for Norwalk, which also threw four different pitchers in the loss.

Smith started and allowed one unearned run on three hits in three innings to take the loss. He struck out one and walked one. Stephan Lukac, Zack Dumbeck and Tyler Norwood combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

MILAN — Ben Bates threw five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, and the offense did the rest as the Chargers opened with a run-rule win over the Wildcats on Monday.

Bates struck out 14 of the 15 outs he recorded and walked a pair of batters for Edison.

Clint Finnen doubled and drove in two for the Chargers. Aiden Drake and Max Hoover were each 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Bryson Wittmer was 2 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs as well.

Peyton Gazemeyer had the lone hit for New London.

CLYDE — Elijah Reed opened the season with a complete-game one-hitter as the Crimson Flashes rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Fliers on Monday.

Reed struck out 12 and walked three in his seven innings of work, allowing two unearned runs in the third inning on one hit.

Reed also helped his cause, as he was 2 for 4 with an RBI at the plate. Ethan Rodriguez added two hits and scored two of the three runs for Willard.

MONROEVILLE — The Eagles allowed 12 runs in the first inning of Monday's non-league loss to the Crimson Streaks at Clark Park.

COLLINS — The Roughriders lost a high-scoring non-league game to the Smithies to open their season on Monday.

Brooklyn Prince was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for Western, while Sydnie Prince doubled and drove in two runs.

Also for Western, Sarah Handke, Brianna Reep, Layken Barnhart, Maylee Wetzel and Abby Hamisfar each singled and had an RBI, while Graci Hartman was 2 for 3 and scored three times.

SHELBY — The Whippets rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Truckers in extra innings in a non-league game on Monday.

Morgan Leber had an RBI double to score Haley Gockstetter in the third inning for the Truckers (0-3), while Callie Helton walked and scored on an error in the fifth inning.

Gockstetter also doubled and Mya Prochnow hit a triple for Norwalk. Hailey Smith, Emily Skeel and Audryn Ott added singles.

In the circle, Gockstetter went 7 2/3 innings. She allowed three unearned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Norwalk is scheduled to visit Crestview on Tuesday.

MONROEVILLE — The Eagles used a six-run sixth inning to defeat the visiting Crimson Streaks by the run rule on Monday at Clark Park.

Monroeville (3-0) was again led by Abbi Poths. The NCAA Division II University of Findlay commit was 4 for 5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs while also scoring twice.

Rachel Fries was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Avery Rosser and Ava Krueger were each 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Emily Scheid singled and drove in four runs, while Camryn Hurst got the win in the circle. She allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

BASCOM — The Flyers fell to the host Cheiftains in five innings in Monday's season opener on the road.

St. Paul got a solo home run from Josalyn Vazquez in the loss, while Teagan Mansfield-Bush added a single and scored a run.

MILAN — The Wildcats got a complete-game one-hit shutout from Emilee Rowland in the circle to open the season with a non-league win over the Chargers on Monday.

Rowland struck out 13 and didn't walk a batter in her seven innings of work for New London.

Laila Rollin was 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Madison Rowland was 1 for 4 with an RBI for the 'Cats, who also got a hit and a run from Tara Davidson and an RBI from Pailee Wilson.

Peyton Taylor had the lone hit for Edison. Sophia Guerra allowed two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.

TRACK AND FIELD

S.C. girls second at Seneca East

ATTICA — The South Central girls track and field team opened the season with a srunners-up finish at the eight-team Seneca East Invitational on Saturday in Attica.

The Trojans scored 94 points to finish second behind Oak Harbor (135), while New London scored 79 points and finished third.

The Trojans took first place in four events, including the 4x200-meter relay. The team of Grace Lamoreaux, Falynn Schumacher, Kendyl Beverly and Angela Williams set a new meet record with a winning time of 1:50.33. Lamoreaux, Beverly, Emily Lamoreaux and Williams also on the 4x400 in 4:32.6.

Also for the Trojans, Grace Lamoreaux won the 100 hurdles (16.77 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (51.87). Williams was second in the 200 dash (29.15) and the long jump (16-feet-4.75 inches), as was Taylor Smith in the pole vault (8 feet).

The 4x100 relay team of Beverly, Schumacher, Smith and Autumn Fry finished third in 55.58 seconds. Jayla Tolliver was third in the 800 (2:50.85) and fourth in the 1600 (6:14.65). Schumacher was fourth (29.97) in the 200 and Oliva Dauch was fourth in the shot put (28-feet-10).

State placer Reese Landis won the 1600 for New London in 5:42.06, while teammate Valery Henry (6:09.76) was third. Those two teamed with Clara Good and Alyssa Henry to win the 4x800 relay in 11:25.98.

Also for New London, Kaitlyn Gum won the discus throw (108 feet) and the shot put (38-feet-9). She was state runners-up in the shot last June.

Alyssa Henry was also second in the 800 (2:49.79), while Madison Smith was third in the 100 hurdles (17.77) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (54.66).

The 4x400 relay of Good, Landis, Smith and Alyssa Henry took fourth (4:51.4), as did Emma McCully in the 3200 (15:57.9).

For the South Central boys, Jack McKee was second in the high jump (5-feet-4).
