St. Petersburg police officer injured by hit and run driver

ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg police officer was conducting a traffic stop early Saturday morning when another vehicle hit his car and fled.

About 1 a.m., the officer had emergency lights activated on I-375 and was exiting his police vehicle when a white Kia sedan hit it, causing minor injury to the officer. He was transported to Bayfront Health and a press release said he is expected to be OK. The officer was not named in the release, but the injury was to his hand.

The white Kia did not stop at the scene, continuing westbound. Later Saturday morning, the Kia was located and Mackenzie Paige Deaton, 24, was charged with serious bodily injury hit and run, tampering with evidence and other citations including failure to follow the Move Over law.
