A new head coach. A roster full of new, young players. There were a lot of questions regarding the St. Philip girls basketball team starting the season.

By the end, the Tigers had a lot of answers.

St. Philip answered skeptics who wondered about the future of the program, considering the rebuilding project ahead, as the Tigers won 12 games with a roster peppered with freshmen — and even 8th-graders — and a first-year head coach.

For leading a quick turnaround for the Tigers, St. Philip's David Grimm is our choice for the Battle Creek Enquirer 2023 Girls Basketball Team Coach of the Year.

Grimm headlines the 2023 Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Girls Basketball Team, which is made up of members of the seven city girls basketball teams and is voted on by the city coaches and the Enquirer sports staff.

St. Philip, with an 8th-grader as its leading scorer, went 12-12 and advanced to the district finals. The dozen wins was the most for the program in six seasons, dating back to a 14-win Tiger team in 2017.

Without a senior on the roster, Grimm navigated a season in which the Tigers were competitive in the Southern Central Athletic Association and even came up with their first win in years over perennial state power Athens in January.

Grimm is joined on the All-City team by two St. Philip players, including the aforementioned 8th-grader in Addi Dzwik, along with junior Miriam Hibbard.

Lakeview matched St. Philip for the most wins in the city with its 12-8 record and adds All-City selections Anya Rankin, Katie Belmore and Aisling Rankin.

Harper Creek and Pennfield both have two All-City players with the Beavers' Ella Chantrenne and Payton Rice making the team and the Panthers' Kaylee Glidden and Natalie Hensel selected.

Battle Creek Central's A'Mya Hodges is also an All-City pick as well as Calhoun Christian's Jayna Schwartz.

In its first year of being eligible to compete in the Michigan High School Athletic Association, Battle Creek Academy is included on the team and has its first All-City player in Sofia Keller.
