Kansas 6A volleyball semifinals are all Johnson County + Missouri quarterfinal pairings
The Kansas Class 6A state high school volleyball champion for 2023 will hail from just south of Kansas City proper.
That much was assured during pool play on Friday at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina, where top-seeded Blue Valley North, No. 2 seed Mill Valley, No. 3 seed Olathe Northwest and No. 4 seed Blue Valley West emerged as the final four for championship Saturday at the annual tournament.
The semifinal victors will advance to the state championship match soon after. Here’s the semifinal lineup for Saturday in Salina, with both of these matches set for 1 p.m.:
Blue Valley North vs. Olathe Northwest
Mill Valley vs. Blue Valley West
All classifications’ state championship matches will begin “25 minutes after the last semifinal match has concluded,” according to the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The Nos. 5-8 seeds for Class 6A — No. 5 seed Washburn Rural; No. 6 seed Garden City; No. 7 seed Manhattan and No. 8 seed Maize — failed to advance out of pool play.
At the 5A tournament, which like the 6A is being contested inside the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina, St. Thomas Aquinas and Spring Hill were the first KC-area squads to advance through Friday’s rounds and secure spots in Saturday’s semifinals.
Spring Hill will take on Aquinas at 9 a.m. Saturday. The other 5A semifinal matchup features Topeka-Seaman vs. Maize South, also at 9.
Failing to advance out of Friday’s pool play were top-seeded Andover Central, No. 3 seed St. James Academy, No. 6 seed Lansing and No. 8 seed Andover.
In the Class 3A tourney at Hutchison, Olathe’s Heritage Christian — the No. 4 seed — advanced through pool play Friday and will meet No. 3 seed Cheney at 9 a.m. Saturday for a berth in the subsequent state-title match.
Pool play Friday for the Class 2A tourney featured a KC-area team — fifth-seeded Maranatha Christian Academy of Shawnee. Maranatha Christian won a pool play match but did not advance to the semis.
