St Vincent Residents Flee in Vehicles as Volcanic Ash Darkens Sky
The La Soufrière volcano on the Caribbean island of St Vincent began erupting on the morning of April 9, following a day of seismic activity that had already prompted evacuations.
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre said the “explosive eruption” was a “culmination of the seismic activity that began on April 8.”
These videos from St Vincent resident Codrian Simmons in North Leeward show an ash-filled sky as people rush into vehicles to escape high-risk areas.
The St Vincent and Grenadines government’s disaster management agency said the eruption produced a plume of ash up to 20,000 feet high, which was moving east.
