St. Vincent-St. Mary fifth at state; Wenzel breaks state assist record; East blanks Garfield

GIRLS GOLF

State Tournament

St. Vincent-St. Mary shot a two-day 716 at the par-70 Ohio State Gray Course this weekend to finish fifth behind Columbus Academy (647), Garaway (670), Independence (691) and Van Buren (707) in the Division II state meet.

Raygan Hoover’s 169 (91-78) paced the Fighting Irish and was good enough to tie for a 21st-place. Caitrin Coyle (172, 85-87) was tied for 26th.

Reese Latta (184, 97-87) logged a top 50 showing at 42nd.

Hawken’s Ella Wong shot a 152 (76-76) to win individual honors.

BOYS GOLF

State Tournament

Coventry’s Ryan Dinan was the best area golfer with a 15th-place finish (161, 85-76) at the par 72 Ohio State Scarlet Course in Division II.

CVCA’s Aiden Cannone was 22nd (167, 85-82) behind Davis Gochenouer’s tournament best 148 (72-76).

Kettering Alter shot a 618 to win the team title.

Seven Hills shot a 659 to win the Division III state tournament. Cardinal Mooney’s Rocco Turner fired a 1-over 145 (74-71) at NorthStar Golf Course to win the individual tournament.

GIRLS TENNIS

Springfield Division I and II District

Hoover’s Tess Bucher won four matches in straight sets to claim the Division I singles title and earn a top seed at state.

She highlighted the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Magnificat’s Anna Bennett for first place.

The Highland doubles team of Sarah Sgambati and Madison Pawlak advanced as well with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Westlake’s Stella Davisson and Mackenzie Stokes to reach fifth-place, but lost to Hoover’s Claire Wood and Angelina Koinoglou.

Jackson’s Madison Altman and Paige Reese (3rd) joined Hoover’s Addyson Utterback and Divya Shnmugam (4th) as qualifiers.

In Division II, Archbishop Hoban’s Haley Slay beat Norton’s Katarina Jovanovic’s 6-0, 6-0 to reach the fifth-place match and then won in three sets over Kenston’s Brooke McNeal to advance.

Division I Cleveland 1 Sectional

Ellet 10, Warren Harding 4

Rachel Wenzel’s four assists gave her 95 in career and moved her past Mansfield Madison’s Taylor Huff for the unofficial state record. Sydney Tucker, Wenzel and Alessandro Pinto registered hat tricks for the 15th-seeded Orangemen (16-2). Charisma Smith had the other goal. Ellet plays third-seeded Jackson on Thursday.

Cuyahoga Falls 3, Boardman 2 (OT)

Ellie Brustoski recorded a hat trick, including one with nine minutes left in sudden victory overtime to lift the 20th-seeded Black Tigers (7-9-2) over the 20th-seeded Spartans. Falls will play fourth-seeded Hudson on Thursday.

Division II, Akron 3 Sectional

Norton 2, Elyria Catholic 1

Dee Otto and Zoe Long scored for the 18th-seeded Panthers (8-7-2) and Norton advanced to a sectional final at seventh-seeded Chagrin Falls (7-4-5) on Wednesday.

Division II Akron 4 Sectional

Tallmadge 8, Shaw 0

Aleena Diamond (2 goals), Julia Anchak (2) Madigan Clum, Ashley Coyle, Abby Caruso and Maddie Davis scored for the 22nd-seeded Blue Devils. Tallmadge will play third-seeded Archbishop Hoban (11-4) on Wednesday.

Buckeye 3, CVCA 2

The 20th-seeded Bucks (5-11) upset the No. 11 Royals (7-5-3) despite the efforts of Kiera Ritzman and Cara Raymer, who scored for CVCA.

Division I Elyria 2 Sectional

Wadsworth 6, Valley Forge 1

The 20th-seeded Grizzlies were led by Tenley Inestroza (2 goals), Kloe Wagner, Jenna Ruether, Laura Flaker and Ashleigh Jones and advanced to a sectional final with sixth-seeded Magnificat on Thursday.

The Bees (14-1-2) overcame a one-goal deficit thanks to goals by Kayla Perfect and Olivia Sipsock in non-league play. Emily Adams scored for the Polar Bears (8-4-4).

The Dragons (5-4, 3-1) were led by Ziare Stevens, who scored four touchdowns in this City Series win over the Rams (2-7, 1-3). Justin Cox and Luther Darisaw hooked up on touchdown passes of eight and 13 yards as well.

Sam Robledo had a hat trick for the Explorers (14-1-1) and Joe Hallis scored twice. Tyler Travis and D.J. Ashe also scored.

Dylan Eckert and Kyler O’Reilly scored twice for the Bees (10-3-3). Owen Alber and Cole Turchyn also had goals.

Jackson Herbert, Michael Watson and Luke Perry scored for the Grizzlies (14-2-1) in non-league action.

The Hornets (19-3) closed out the season in style as Alayna Tessena (27 kills), Megan Scavuzzo (32 assists) and Ashley Shefferly (27 digs) continued their dominant play.

Maya Dexter finished with 23 digs to take over 1,000 in her career for the Blue Devils (15-7). Lexi Gray added 24 assists. Zoe Rensel (eight kills, two blocks) and Ella Bee (eight kills, six aces) also played well.

Archbishop Hoban 25-25-25, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 11-8-7

Sophia Day (20 assists) and Macie Mintz (19 points, six aces) paced the Knights (17-5) on the final day of the regular season.
