Wait a minute. Stop the music! Wrong governor, wrong song.

There is, though, a new musical tribute to a modern-day Southern governor. And this song sings the praises not of Alabama’s George Wallace, who is name-dropped in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic “Sweet Home Alabama,” but a new political lightning rod: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

It is called “Sweet Florida,” and was written — as it so happens — by Skynyrd frontman and Jacksonville native Johnny Van Zant and his brother Donnie of 38 Special. The pair sang it Friday morning on the morning show “Fox & Friends” to a nationwide TV audience and an appreciative Gov. DeSantis, who smiled as he listened in on Zoom.

A sample of the lyrics:

“The press don’t like it

but it sure does get my business

He staaands up for whaaat he belieeeves

So don’t come down here to try to change things

we’re doing all right in the Sunshine State

Stay out of our business

leave our guv alone.....”

After the song was sampled at the tail end of the show, the governor briefly complained about The Walt Disney Company for opposing the Parental Rights in Education Bill, which critics have dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and was praised by the show hosts for “sticking to his guns.”

Hailing the tune as “catchy,” and “stays in your head,” DeSantis said he has posted “Sweet Florida” on his website.

“We love our governor down here,” Johnny Van Zant said.
