A jury took a half hour to find a Jacksonville man guilty of stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend about 100 times and now faces the death penalty phase of his sentencing, according to court records.

Randall Bernard Brown, 39, was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder and armed burglary with assault or battery in the early morning slaying on Aug. 3, 2021, at the victim’s home on Brooklyn Road. Authorities have only identified the victim as a 39-year-old.

Also charged as an accessory after the fact is the girlfriend, Kissy Terice Jovan Mackey, who was a witness and had recently broken off a relationship with the Brown. But after the murder, she went back with the suspect, according to an arrest warrant. Mackey, 45, is awaiting trial.

Mackey told police the victim answered a knock at the door and was stabbed by an unknown man who then set the front door area on fire and began to flee on a bicycle. She said she got in her vehicle and ran him over, but he was able to run off with the gas can, according to an arrest report. While police were searching, they found a gas container, backpack, knife and a GPS tracking device registered to the suspect a block away.

“Brown knew Mackey was already dating another man and he attempted to win her back,” the State Attorney’s Office said. “Brown put the tracking device on Mackey’s car to find out where she was sleeping at night. Just over a day before the murder, Brown searched on Google how to kill someone with a knife then made other incriminating searches before and after the murder. Mere hours after the crime, Mackey changed her Facebook status to ‘in a relationship’ with Brown.”

The two were documented together several times after the attack, and a month later they were arrested. Brown was a truck driver for Goodwill and Mackey a bail bonds agent for Mr. Florida Bail Bonds, according to an arrest report.

Jurors must decide whether to recommend death or life in prison. That process begins Friday.
