A stable is asking for help caring for two horses that were hurt in a massive fireworks explosion in Ontario as medical costs keep adding up.
A plea to help the horses hurt in the massive fireworks explosion at an Ontario home. A stable is giving the horses the care they desperately need. And as Eyewitness News reporter Leo Stallworth shows us, the cost is adding up, and you can help.
LEO STALLWORTH: Thanks to big hearts, severely burned horses, like this one, getting the medical attention needed to recover. This is one of two horses suffering horrible burns when a massive fireworks explosion at an Ontario home in mid-March killed two people and rattled nerves in a blast radius encompassing upwards of 80 homes.
GRETA HITZEMAN: It was a war zone. When we got there, it was a war zone.
LEO STALLWORTH: Greta Hitzeman describing the scene when she rushed to the blast zone to help the horses caught in the crosshairs of the explosion. Greta rescuing and nursing Lightning and Vavoom, the two horses with the worst burns at her Silver Spring stable. Video showing firefighters trying to corral Lighting in the aftermath of the blast.
GRETA HITZEMAN: The horses were running like they were scared to death. You can imagine what they've been through.
LEO STALLWORTH: Greta opening her heart and wallet, incurring the mounting medical bills, caring for the horses. This horse, she says, ended up with severe, horrific burns to its side. This after being pinned against the burning wall, barely escaping with its life.
GRETA HITZEMAN: It's nasty. I'm sure it's painful. We're treating it the best we can. The vet informed me that she will most likely need skin grafts, because it's just going to be such a large scarred area.
CINNAMON MCDONALD: I'm a first responder, so I came out to see if I could help in any way.
LEO STALLWORTH: Cinnamon McDonald not hesitating to help anyone in need, including animals the day of the blast. Now she's trying to help Greta deal with the cost of caring for the burned horses. She spells out what the horses need.
- OK. OK. Simple as that?
CINNAMON MCDONALD: Lots of love. We need money, because Vavoom needs an extensive surgery on her jaw. And lightning obviously has some serious issues going on with her skin that may require skin grafts.
LEO STALLWORTH: A GoFundMe page has been set up for donations to help the cost of medical care and more for the horses.
