STAC softball title to Corning courtesy of two wins Saturday
The girls from Corning avenged their lone loss of the season Saturday by defeating Maine-Endwell, 6-2, for the program’s first Southern Tier Athletic Conference softball championship.
Leadoff batter and shortstop-supreme Atalyia Rijo was 3-for-4 and Sophia Polzella 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI for the Hawks, New York’s third-ranked Class AA team improved to an 18-1 record.
Starting pitcher Peyton Sullivan struck out eight in five innings, and Jillian Austin relieved with two innings of one-hit, two strikeout pitching.
Polzella drove in runs with a second-inning single and a third-inning homer.
Lauren Dundon was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Maine-Endwell, which defeated Corning in 12 innings for the most recent available STAC title in 2019.
The semifinal brought Corning a 10-6 victory over Chenango Valley. The Hawks overcame a 3-0, top-of-the-first deficit and led by 8-3 through the fourth.
Kelsey Booker was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and six RBI in that one. Kellie Zoerb and Olivia Keegan contributed two hits each.
Kate Hope and Chloe Osteen had two hits apiece for Chenango Valley.
