Stacey Abrams has ended the speculation swirling around her political future for the last three years: She will run for governor of Georgia in 2022.

Abrams made the announcement in a video released on Twitter, setting the stage for a potential rematch against current Gov. Brian Kemp if he wins the GOP primary.

“I’m running for Governor because opportunity in our state shouldn’t be determined by zip code, background or access to power,” she said in the post.

In response to the announcement, Kemp bashed Abrams and her “far-left agenda of open borders, gun confiscation, high taxes, and anti-law enforcement policies” in a statement.

“Stacey’s never-ending campaign for power has already hurt Georgia businesses and cost our state millions – all in service to her ultimate ambition of becoming President of the United States,” Kemp said. “Next November’s election for Governor is a battle for the soul of our state. I’m in the fight against Stacey Abrams, the failed Biden agenda, and their woke allies to keep Georgia the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Abrams lost Georgia’s 2018 gubernatorial race by less than 55,000 or 1.4 percentage points — one of the closest margins in decades. Abrams acknowledged that Kemp would be certified as the victor, but she refused to concede the race citing an “erosion” of voting rights and democracy.

In the years since her defeat, Abrams founded Fair Fight Action, an advocacy and voting rights organization. She was rumored as a possible U.S. Senate candidate to challenge then-incumbent David Perdue in 2020, but ultimately opted to stay out of the race.

If elected, Abrams would be Georgia’s first Black governor and the first Black woman elected to the governor’s office nationwide.
