Stadium water tests free of Legionella, Oakwood Schools says
Sep. 9—The water system at Lane Stadium tested free of Legionella, Oakwood City Schools announced Wednesday.
The building containing restrooms, training room and concession stand is back open at the stadium after the district received results of testing conducted Monday after the water was treated. Activities at Lane — which is used for field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and track — were postponed Sept. 1 but resumed the next day after portable restrooms and alternative water sources were brought in.
It was the second time Legionella has been detected in Oakwood schools in the past month. The bacteria was found at Smith Elementary School after tests in early August.
The bacteria can cause pneumonia-like Legionnaires' disease. A Kettering Fairmont High School custodian died in 2019 of the disease.
Anytime a building or fixtures have been dormant or unused for a period of time, bacteria can build up, Public Health — Dayton & Montgomery County has said.
At Smith, "all of the water sources are currently operational and safe to use," district spokeswoman Traci Hale said previously.
District officials said they worked Solid Blend Technologies, a water management business, to treat the Lane and Smith water systems.
Smith also was treated for the bacteria in August 2020.
