Stafford's Gutierrez leads Bulldogs over SMSA in baseball

Apr. 17—The Stafford High baseball team finished off a four-game homestand in style Monday.

Tristan Gutierrez pitched six innings of three-hit ball as the Bulldogs defeated SMSA 5-1 in NCCC action. Gutierrez walked three and struck out 10.

Stafford (4-2) tied the game at 1 with a run in the bottom of the first then added runs in the third and fourth and two in the fifth to take command.

Josh Tuller had an RBI triple and Ryan Gilluly scored twice for the Bulldogs. Cole Hasel, Hayden Iacobucci, and Gilluly each reached base three times. SMSA is 2-4..

ENFIELD 6, PLATT 5. In Meriden, Jack Raymond cleared the bases with a three-run, two-out triple in the sixth as Enfield rallied for the CCC interdivisional win.

Braiden Alaimo started the sixth-inning rally for the Eagles (5-1), who trailed 5-3 after five innings, with a leadoff double and Michael Bagley was hit by a pitch with no outs.

Following two strikeouts, Jack Harmon walked before Raymond delivered his clutch triple into center field to put Enfield ahead to stay.

Ryan Senn worked around a two-out single in the seventh to record the save. Jake Lubanski picked up the win with 1Î innings of scoreless relief.

TOLLAND 3, WETHERSFIELD 1. Senior Matt Haggerty tossed five shutout innings en route to the win as host Tolland won a CCC interdivisional game.

Tolland (3-3) built a 3-0 lead thanks to runs in the second, third and fifth. Wethersfield (2-2) trimmed it to 3-1 in the sixth but couldn't get closer.

Haggerty allowed six hits and struck out seven in five innings for the hosts. Joe Zabilansky earned the save.

Adam Pivacek and Christian Steiner each had a hit and a RBI in the win while Ethan Schwarz and Wyatt Zahner each had a hit and a run scored.

GLASTONBURY 6, MANCHESTER 5. In Glastonbury, the Guardians (5-1) broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth with a run and handed the Red Hawks (6-1) their first loss.

Noah Scurto and Collin Martin each had two hits for Glastonbury.

PJ Ortiz had three hits and scored twice for Manchester, which got two hits from Angel Rodriguez.

EAST HARTFORD 3, SW 2 (8). In South Windsor, Jayden Dombrowski went 2-for-4 with a double and triple and Jadis Vegas 2-for-3 with an RBI as East Hartford improved to 4-3. The Bobcats (2-4) got two hits each from Andrew Goulet and Brayden Edwards.

SOMERS 4, CHENEY TECH 2. In Somers, Troy Maia pitched a six-hitter as the host Spartans made it three straight wins to get back to .500 in non-league action. He struck out eight.

Colby McCormick had three hits for Somers (3-3). Spencer Johnson pitched a complete game for Cheney Tech (3-4). Jacob Perez hit a solo home run.

EW/INT'L 22, INNOVATION 3. Freshman Evan Bober had two hits and four RBIs and the host Panthers scored 17 runs in the fourth to earn a nonconference win in five innings in East Windsor.

The East Windsor/International co-op (2-4) scored four runs in the third to take a four-run lead. The Ravens (0-4) scored twice in the fourth to trim it to 5-3 before the hosts' onslaught.

Bober finished 2-for-3 with a walk and also scored a run. Shane Ritchie went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored in the win while Tyler Natitus had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Trey Moses was the winning pitcher for the Panthers. Freshman Alex Rodriguez had a double and a run scored for Innovation.
