Stahlstown man dies in Ligonier Township crash

Jul. 15—A Stahlstown man was killed in a head-on crash Saturday morning in Ligonier Township.

The crash occurred about 6 a.m. at the intersection of Route 711 and Freeman Road, according to Westmoreland County 911.

Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson identified the crash victim as Thomas Nusser, 86, of Stahlstown.

Nusser was traveling by himself in a Honda CR-V heading north on Route 711. His car crossed into the oncoming traffic and struck a Dodge Nitro head-on, according to the coroner.

Carson said an unidentified woman who was driving the Dodge was injured and taken to a Cambria County hospital for treatment.

The coroner said Nusser was not wearing a seat belt. He was thrown from his car, which then struck him on the roadway.

Nusser was an independent contractor who delivered the Tribune-Review.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Nusser," said Jennifer Bertetto, president and CEO of Trib Total Media. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

Ligonier Valley police and local fire crews remained at the scene Saturday morning to continue the investigation.

Police continued to investigate the cause of the crash.

A three-mile stretch of Route 711 was closed to traffic for several hours but reopened shortly after 10 a.m., according to 911.
