Stair-climbers raise $75K in Springfield to fight lung disease

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Nearly 200 people, more than 500 steps, and around $75,000 raised. Stair-climbers gathered in Springfield this weekend to help support people living with lung disease throughout the state.

On Saturday, 179 climbers of all skill levels gathered at the Wyndham City Centre for the 2024 Fight For Air Climb Springfield. They scaled 32 floors with the goal of raising awareness and money for the 1.4 million Illinoisans who fight lung disease, which includes conditions like lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

The funds will go towards the American Heart Association’s lung disease research, education, and advocacy.

“Thanks to the determination of our supporters and climbers, we raised $75,000 to help ongoing efforts to end lung cancer and lung disease in Illinois,” said Brett Schuette, Executive Director at the American Lung Association. “We are very grateful to everyone that came out to support lung health and so proud of the funds raised.”

Officials said the association looks forward to next year’s climb event.
