‘Stand With Kyrie’: Scenes from the protest outside Barclays Center
Before the Brooklyn Nets played their home opener at Barclays Center on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets, a group of protesters opposed to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate that is currently keeping Kyrie Irving away from the team gathered outside the arena and made their voices heard.
Around 100 protesters in total, according to ESPN, stood in solidarity with Irving, who announced that he is opposed to the New York law requiring him to receive the vaccination in order to be eligible to play home games. Prior to the start of the season, the Nets declared Irving ineligible for all contests and team activities, ruling him out until he meets the requirements for full eligibility.
Some protesters pushed over barricades and approached the entrance to the arena, causing Barclays Center to close its doors temporarily. Sunday’s game proceeded as scheduled.
