Stanhope Elmore High School student charged with indecent exposure on campus

A shooting critically injured a woman Wednesday.

MILLBROOK — A 19-year-old Stanhope Elmore High School student has been charged with indecent exposure and harassment after allegedly exposing himself to a female student in an on-campus incident a year ago.

Kristian M. Mullins of Coosada, was arrested Tuesday, said Police Chief P.K. Johnson. Mullins has been released on bond from the Elmore County Jail, Johnson said, but he did not give the bond amount. Mullins could not be reached for comment and courthouse records show he doesn’t have an attorney.

Mullins is no longer on campus and the board of education’s policies and student handbook requirements will be followed, said Superintendent Richard Dennis. He said he could not comment specifically on student discipline matters.

The accuser in the case came to school officials on Feb. 27, and reported that sometime in March of 2022, Mullins exposed himself and touched her inappropriately in class while school was in session, Johnson said.

School officials contacted the police and an investigation began. The female student pressed charges and Mullins was arrested at his home on Tuesday.

“As the police chief, a parent and a grandparent, it greatly disturbs me that there was such a delay in this incident being reported to school officials and law enforcement,” the chief said. “That said, I want to be clear, I am in no way criticizing the victim in this case. What I am saying, with intent and purpose, is that we as parents, teachers, school administrators and law enforcement have to instill in our young people that things like this, no matter how difficult or embarrassing, must be reported to the appropriate people.

“Preferably, that would start at home, with a parent or guardian, but it could be anyone. At the end of the day, the school officials and law enforcement must be made aware of issues like this, sooner rather than later, so that the issue can be addressed and appropriate actions taken. This is imperative, so that we can provide a safe and secure environment in our schools, as well as protect our most precious resource, which is our young people.”
