Stanislaus Sheriff’s Office to hold DUI checkpoint. Here’s when. It’s not saying where

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the county on Friday night.

The specific location and the exact time frame of the checkpoint will not be announced before or during the event, said department spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz. However, it will take place sometime during the “mid-evening” hours of Friday night and last until the early morning hours of Saturday.

“We want impaired drivers to do the right thing, enjoy responsibly at home and utilize a designated driver,” said Schwartz.

Deputies will be looking for signs of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said a Sheriff’s Office news release.

The release also advises residents to “continue using their seat belts, putting away their cell phones, following the rules of the road, and keeping an eye out for dangerous drivers” in addition to finding responsible ways to travel, such as: designating a driver, finding alternative modes of transportation like calling a taxi or ride-share service and preventing those who have been drinking from driving.

“Drunk drivers often face jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates and dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, having car towed, collision repair, and lost wages due to time off from work,” according to the release. “Even worse, a drunk driver can cause a traffic crash that claims someone’s life or even their own.”

A grant from the California Cannabis Tax Fund helped secure the Sheriff’s Office access to over $100,000 to be used for things such as DUI checkpoints, Schwartz said.

He added that the exact cost of Friday’s checkpoint was unknown and could fluctuate. Many of the personnel who will be assigned to it will be working on their normal days off, which would necessitate overtime pay, said Schwartz.
