Stanley Cups aren't the only craze: This Oklahoma-made pink heart cup sold out in minutes

If you missed out on the limited edition Galentine's Stanley cups, and still want a pink cup for the Valentine's season, there's an option made right here in Oklahoma for you.

Over the past year or so, the 40 oz tumbler from Stanley has gone viral and sent social media feeds into a cup craze. The attention on the $45 cup has also put other companies in the spotlight, like the Oklahoma-based Simple Modern Trek Tumbler.

Founded in 2015, Simple Modern is based in Moore and in 2022 moved all production to an OKC warehouse.

Just weeks after shoppers went crazy for the limited edition Galentine's Stanley cups sold at Target, Simple Modern launched their own app-exclusive Valentine's cups.

The two most popular cups, a pink cup covered in red hearts and a pink checkered option, sold out in under an hour Thursday morning, Chief Marketing Officer Chris Hoyle said.

"We've been very excited to see the response, and we will continue to do everything we can to bring unique, different seasonal offerings to people," Hoyle said.

Thursday afternoon there were still two Valentine's tumblers in stock, a multi-tone purple cup and a neutral floral cup, though they were expected to sell out soon. Hoyle said St. Patrick's Day cups will be on the horizon next.

And, if you just want a good 'ole pink cup for the Valentine's season, check out the non-limited edition 40 oz tumbler in Raspberry Vibes.

Having started with the company in 2016, Hoyle said he never expected to see it grow so quickly. Today, the company's products, especially the 40 oz tumbler, have thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon and have retail agreements with stores like Walmart, Target and Sam's Club.

"To see this kind of growth this quickly has been amazing," Hoyle said. "It's been ... interesting to see how the category has grown in so many ways. A lot of our growth has been a result of the category exploding as well. So we were at the right place, at the right time, with the right offer."

The 40 oz insulated cup from Simple Modern was featured on Good Morning America Thursday in a "Try Before you Buy" segment, during which the Oklahoma-made cup was chosen as the winner over both the Stanley tumbler and a similar cup from Walmart's Ozark Trail brand.

The cup held up better when it came to leaking and keeping drinks cold.

Why are people obsessed with cups right now?

Hoyle said water bottles and cups are having "a moment," and that he's not sure how long it will last.

A small part of it, he said, is likely due to an increased awareness on the importance of hydration. The bigger piece is they're easy to market, he said, especially with the rise of TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Consumers are seeing their water bottles and cups as an accessory, like a new pair of shoes, with the added perk of encouraging them to drink more water, Hoyle said. You can even buy charms, name plates, kitschy straw covers and special bags just to carry your cup in.

"It's an affordable way of expressing yourself, and self-expression is becoming even more important to people," Hoyle said.

Simple Modern donates to nonprofits

Despite such large growth, Hoyle said the company's core values have remained the same, as well as its mission statement of existing "to give generously."

The company gives at least 10% of all annual profits to non-profit organizations, and has donated at least $2 million so far, according to its website. Most of those donations go to Oklahoma nonprofits, and Hoyle said he hopes everyday Oklahomans are proud of what the homegrown company has accomplished and stands for.

Giving generously also applies to customers, Hoyle said.

"That doesn't always mean that you're the lowest priced thing on the shelf," he said. "But we want customers to be delighted, we want them to be like, 'I got more than I bargained for.'"
