Star Ben Simmons explains new offensive aggression, free throw success

Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons is not one to really have big offensive nights. He makes his impact on the game by playing excellent defense and doing everything else on the floor to ensure his team succeeds on either end.

However, lately, he has been attacking downhill and thinking score. He shot 6-for-11 from the floor in Thursday’s win over the Dallas Mavericks and he was working well in the post against the smaller Mavs.

This all a part of newfound offensive aggression in his game and it is something that he can use more moving forward. It would help add more to Philadelphia’s offense as a whole.

“Just getting back to who I am,” said Simmons. “Working on my mental. I’d say that’s the biggest thing is my mental. Overall, just being who I am and knowing what I’m capable of.”

Another big thing that has stood out is his success at the foul line. He made 3-for-5 on Thursday, but in his previous four games, he shot nine, 13, 14, and six free throws and he made them at a 78.6% clip. That is something new in his game that is not normally seen from him.

“I think me and Sam (Cassell) talk and work every day on it,” Simmons added. “Just taking my time, getting into a rhythm and knowing if I do miss, why I missed. I think that was big. I’m confident going to the line. I love getting in those free those and having that confidence to knock them down especially if I’m gonna shoot 10 or 12 a game.”

Cassell has clearly had an influence on Simmons this season. He has been on him about his turnovers and now he has been on him about getting to the line. This has been a positive partnership to begin the 2020-21 season.

“I think overall, we just work together,” Simmons finished. “I can relate to him. We talk every day and we have a great relationship. It’s only growing. He’s helped me a lot with my game and running this team.”

The Sixers will now face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday which offers another opportunity for Simmons and the team to get better.
