Star Wars 8 Plot Speculation: Where Next For Rey, Finn, Kylo And Luke?

‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ began principal photography last week, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle of speculation, rumour and leaks before Rian Johnson’s film is finally released in 660 days.

So far however, there have been no solid rumours regarding what might happen in 'Episode 8’. All we have to go on is the wonderful set-up of JJ Abrams’ 'The Force Awakens’.

If you haven’t seen 'Episode 7’, now’s the time to turn away, because we’re about to spoil basically everything.

'The Force Awakens’ sets up 'Episode 8’ to begin with the training of Rey (Daisy Ridley) by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). Of course, these four will be central to the film.

During their training, or the scenes they share, we’ll learn more about each character. In the case of Rey, we will presumably find out more about her parentage, in the case of Kylo Ren we’ll see the lasting effect killing his own father had on him. Has he fully succumbed to the dark side?

Learning more about the two masters will perhaps be more interesting however. Luke will get the chance to explain his self-exile (did he feel the pull of the dark side after Kylo Ren’s betrayal?) and we’ll hopefully see Snoke in the flesh and discover more about the character.

Before long Rey and Ren will be drawn into the film’s driving plot, which will likely see the First Order making efforts to seize the opportunity presented after they destroyed the Republic capital, and take control of the galaxy. How they do so, we don’t know, but hopefully it isn’t another Death Star (three times is plenty, LucasFilm).

Of course the Resistance - led by General Leia (Carrie Fisher) - will be on hand to fend off the First Order threat. We imagine Leia will be scrambling to unify the remnants of the Republic, all the while awaiting the First Order’s next move.

Which leads us Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), the most fearsome pilot in the Resistance, who needs a more central role this time around. Hopefully that will come from his blossoming friendship with Finn (John Boyega), who we last saw catatonic after suffering a beating at the hands (and lightsaber) of Kylo Ren.

The dark Jedi’s finishing blow was a upward slash to the back of Finn, which opens the door for Finn being left paralysed by the attack. In turn, this could lead to Finn - in true 'Star Wars’ style - becoming part machine. This would get him back on his feet and possibly see him assume the role of an important solider for the Resistance. The dilemma for Finn however, will be that very role. He turned his back on the First Order to escape the life of a soldier - does he even want to fight?

Finn won’t be able to escape Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) however, who will return despite being left (off-screen) in Starkiller Base’s trash compactor. Her return hopefully means she gets the treatment her incredible (and yes, toy-selling) design deserves. The natural storyline would have her tracking down the traitor Finn, who, remember, was a solider under her command, and exacting her revenge for getting garbage water all over that lovely armour.

This just about covers what we can speculate regarding the characters we know will return, but what of the newcomers. Will Benecio del Toro play a First Order commander? Will Laura Dern play Rey’s mother? The answers to those questions, we’ll find out in due course.

'Star Wars: Episode 8’ is set for release on 15 December 2017.
