Star Wars 9: Rian Johnson responds to rumours JJ Abrams may retcon Rey's parentage

Rian Johnson has responded to rumours that Star Wars: Episode IX director JJ Abrams may retcon the character Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parentage.

During Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which Johnson directed, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) revealed that Rey’s parents were merely ”filthy junk traders” rather than Skywalkers.

However, Abrams – who also directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens – reportedly had different plans for the leading hero, with actor Simon Pegg saying Abrams’s ideas had been “undone slightly” by The Last Jedi.

Johnson was quizzed about whether Abrams changing Rey’s parents would matter by MTV, telling the publication over the weekend: “I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back. I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled.

“I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do, and just go along for the ride. For me, that’s why I go to the movies, you know?”

Johnson is working on his own trilogy of Star Wars films, revealing that LucasFilm and Disney are still working out the upcoming slate of films.
