Star Wars series The Acolyte has received a release date.

According to Collider, Leslye Headland's new prequel series has received a summer 2024 premiere date on streaming site Disney+.

The Acolyte is set during the final days of the High Republic era and 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It will show the Jedi at the peak of their power, and sees a former Jedi Padawan reunite with their master to investigate a series of crimes across the galaxy.

However, they soon find themselves confronted by forces more sinister than they could have expected across the ever-changing galaxy.

The cast is led by Bodies Bodies Bodies' Amandla Stenberg and Squid Game's Lee Jung-jae who will play the Jedi Padawan and Master respectively.

Joining them in the ensemble cast are Game of Thrones star Dean-Charles Chapman, Litvinenko's Margarita Levieva and The Matrix's Carrie-Anne Moss, The Good Place's Manny Jacinto and His Dark Materials' Dafne Keen.

Rounding out the cast are Anne Boleyn actress Jodie Turner-Smith, Russian Doll's Charlie Barnett and Inventing Anna's Rebecca Henderson, who will play fan-favourite character Vernestra Rwoh.

Sequel trilogy actor Joonas Suotamo will also be returning to the franchise to play a brand new character, a Wookiee Jedi named Kel Naka. Headland will serve as the series' creator, showrunner, executive producer and director.

One thing that will be absent from the series however are blaster guns, with Keen previously revealing the show would focus heavily on lightsaber combat.

"There's a lack of guns, which personally as someone who loves fighting and stunts and stuff, I love," she said during an interview on Entertainment Weekly's Dagobah Dispatch podcast.

"We have a lot of the sabers. And Chris Cowan and Mark Ginther and Daren Nop have choreographed all of these wonderful, wonderful stunts in such a beautiful way – it's visually stunning."

Star Wars: The Acolyte is expected to come to Disney+ in Summer 2024. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
