Star Wars Episode VIII Is Now 'The Last Jedi'

From Popular Mechanics

The title for the eighth installment of the Star Wars saga, premiering this December, will be Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a clear reference to everyone's favorite moisture farmer Luke Skywalker. The title was revealed on Star Wars' official Twitter channel.

Almost the entire plot of The Force Awakens-other than destroying yet another Death Star-like contraption-was trying to find Luke Skywalker, who went into hiding after something went wrong involving his Jedi academy. With The Last Jedi, it would seem pretty clear that Skywalker will be a major focus of the film-or at least actually have a speaking role this time. The fact that the tweet specifically mentions the "Skywalker" saga makes as much clear. Of course, there is a theory that Rey is a Skywalker, so it's possible that the title could be in reference to her as well.

The Star Wars red font choice is also interesting, as the logo has usually stuck with a yellow-colored font since the beginning. The only two times the franchise has used a red font was when Return of the Jedi was originally called Revenge of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith. Although the allusion is likely inconsequential, Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi would likely have some things in common, most obviously dealing with the return of the Jedi with Skywalker once again as the only remaining one of his kind. Maybe there's also some...revenge involved?

I guess we'll just have to (patiently) wait and see what director Rian Johnson has in store for us on December 15, 2017.
