'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' premieres in Shanghai

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is nominated in 11 categories.

The latest in the "Star Wars" franchise premiered in China on Sunday night, December 27.

The movie has already broken opening-weekend records in the US, Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe, scoring the biggest worldwide debut with $529 million, even before its launch in China.

At the premiere of the world's second-largest market, held at the Shanghai Grand Theatre, actors Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and co-stars BB-8 and R2D2, as well as director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, made an appearance on the red carpet.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will open to the public in China on January 9.
