New Star Wars movie debuts with 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

The new Star Wars movie A Disturbance in the Force has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% fresh rating after premiering at the South by Southwest festival on March 11.

The film is a documentary presented as an "investigation" into why the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special was made. The doc includes talking heads Seth Green, Weird Al Yankovic, Donny Osmond, Gilbert Gottfried and more.

The Star Wars Holiday Special is rarely spoken about in the Star Wars universe. It has never been rebroadcast and is yet to see an official home media release.

And while the Holiday Special itself was critically panned, this tell-all doc has generated rave reviews and is a must-watch for Star Wars fans — especially those who have never seen the special.

Variety writes that Star Wars fans will "appreciate it a lot more than casual viewers" but adds that "you don't have to be a Star Wars diehard to value the documentary for its tea-spilling and gossip-mongering".

The Hollywood Reporter describes the doc as "unpolished" but says that adds to its charm, writing: "That lack of polish actually fits acceptably for a film in which almost all the footage is cobbled from degraded video cassettes and archival appearances. It makes the doc come across as a loving relic paying tribute to a beloved relic."

Collider calls the film "a celebration of Star Wars and its history, even in its weirdest forms", while Slashfilm says it's "the story of a time when having the biggest movie of all time didn't guarantee lasting cultural impact".

IndieWire adds that the doc is "a charming reminder of when franchise junk could be authentically, idiosyncratically terrible — not just the homogenous, boardroom-steered mediocrity of this moment".

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
